No one was quite sure how it happened. How could a government create something like this and unleash it on it’s own people? The infection was elegant; A cross between different flus with no known antidote. Only those deemed worthy were saved, shoved into bunkers and flown to other countries as the bomb was detonated over America. No one was sure how far the fallout would travel, if Canada would be effected, or just how long it was until it was safe.
Things had just gotten too hard for America’s economy. Too many were out of work, too many were sick. Too many relied on the failing government to support them in a time when the government itself needed support. So, the greedy hands that directed fate drew up a plan. “Thin the herd” as it were. Only those who were strong enough to survive the infection would live on and once the population had been taken care of, the leaders would emerge and pacify those who had survived with stories of terrorism and war on our enemies.
But they didn’t account for the rapid evolution of the disease and the effects it would have on the infected. What started off with simple flu-like symptoms soon became fatal, the high fever frying the brain in its own juices. But the disease didn’t stop. The cells of the virus soon took over its host’s cells, feeding on superfluous tissues in the body to jump-start the re-animation process. It was in this process, though, that the once human mind was reprogrammed to its animalistic settings. And, with the loss of bodily tissues, came a hunger for that which had been used.
It was brilliantly orchestrated. First the livestock was killed silently, swiftly, just enough to push the devout into their places of worship but leave the unfaithful to wonder just what caused the sudden drop of millions of animals. The tension within the Middle East was…well it just was. But for those studied in the signs of the apocalypse? Another reason to repent and explanation for the bomb that flew over the Mid-Western states and detonated, a cloud raining over the entirety of the US and leaving many questioning as to just what purpose it had.
But when masses of people began falling ill, everyone was sure the world was over. Chaos broke out across the nation. People looting, raping, killing from coast to coast. And it was in that panic that the disease took root. A weeping wife, laying across her husband’s recently deceased body, frowns as her high school sweetheart sits up. A miracle she thinks, until his cuspids are buried deep in the flesh of the neck he so sweetly nuzzled not but three days prior.
If you weren’t eaten, you turned. And our happy couple? Lives on forever, in search of flesh to eat with their bodies unencumbered by physical limitations. With fried pain receptors sprinting for miles after your prey, which is escaping in a stolen Ford Escalade, isn’t really a problem.
